Student welfare
Extra support, special educational needs, behaviour and attendance.
A student needs extra support
The Ministry's Student Support Services Section supports students' social, emotional, behavioural and intellectual needs. The guides list a referral to Student Services.
Including students with special educational needs
Every student should be able to learn alongside their peers, with teaching and assessment that meet their needs. Formal assessments help identify special educational needs.
Managing student behaviour and discipline
Principals are responsible for school discipline. Teach positive behaviour clearly, enforce it consistently, and use preventative and progressive discipline.
Recording student attendance
Record every student's attendance in the official register. Work with parents and bus drivers so students arrive on time and stay until classes end.
Laws and policies listed in the guide
Section 6 of both guides lists these under Student welfare.
