What quality education means

Supporting the curriculum

The curriculum sets out what is taught, why, when and how, and how it is assessed. Your job is to make sure it is taught well, with the time and resources it needs.

How to support it

  1. Step 1: Lead by example. Get directly involved in every part of putting the curriculum into practice.
  2. Step 2: Encourage teachers to lead on, and take ownership of, the curriculum.
  3. Step 3: Explain the curriculum to teachers, students and parents, including what students should achieve and how progress is measured.
  4. Step 4: Organise and take part in professional development that prepares teachers to use specific teaching and assessment practices.
  5. Step 5: Make sure teachers and students have the learning resources the curriculum needs.
  6. Step 6: Monitor how the curriculum is being taught across the school.
  7. Step 7: Set up a way for teachers to give feedback, and act on their suggestions.
  8. Step 8: Create and enforce schedules that give teachers enough time to teach the full curriculum. Keep disruptions to a minimum.
  9. Step 9: Review lesson plans regularly to check the curriculum is followed.
  10. Step 10: Observe classes regularly and give teachers helpful feedback.
  1. Step 1: Make sure every curriculum includes current, evidence-based practice for teaching, learning and balanced assessment.
  2. Step 2: Support school leaders to put the curriculum into practice, through coaching, mentoring and supportive supervision.
  3. Step 3: Help teachers and school leaders understand the curriculum’s scope, sequence and content.
  4. Step 4: Develop policies and procedures that support curriculum implementation.
  5. Step 5: Allocate enough funding, resources, textbooks, technology, time and equipment.
  6. Step 6: Create and enforce annual school calendars that protect teaching time.
  7. Step 7: Organise, fund and run the professional development teachers and leaders need. Give them chances to collaborate and network.
  8. Step 8: Monitor, evaluate and adjust implementation using different kinds of data. Survey students about a new curriculum.
  9. Step 9: Build curriculum into continuous school and system improvement, with a clear accountability framework.

If you are a school leader

Lesson plan reviews and classroom observations are key. See Reviewing a lesson plan or observing a class and Making sure every class gets the same curriculum.

If you are an education officer
