  4. The teacher clearly explains what is expected of students, and checks they understand.
  5. Key concepts and skills are taught and reinforced.
  6. Teaching helps students understand, master and apply key concepts and skills, rather than memorise by rote.
  7. Formative assessment is used during the lesson to monitor learning and adjust teaching.
  8. Students have some choice in learning activities and resources.
  9. Lesson content is presented in more than one way, including spoken and visual.
  10. The teacher models, demonstrates and gives examples of key concepts and skills.

If you are a school leader

Use regular classroom observations to give teachers supportive supervision, including helpful feedback.

If you are an education officer

On school visits, record what you observe and debrief with the school leader and teacher straight away. Give descriptive feedback that encourages improvement.
