Organising internal and external examinations

Principals must examine pupils in the way the Education Regulations set out. In a secondary school, the deputy principal oversees exam arrangements.

What the regulations say

  1. You must examine pupils in the subjects taught, in the way set out in regulation 44(1) and (2).
  2. In a secondary school, the deputy principal oversees all internal and external exam arrangements (regulation 19).
  3. This includes the exam timetable, preparing facilities, inspecting and storing internal papers, and invigilation.
  4. It also covers delivering answer papers to the right people. The deputy follows up so they are processed on time.

If you are a school leader

Exams have a big effect on students’ lives, especially when one score decides placement, promotion or scholarships. Make sure assessment in your school is fair and accurate, and use exams as one part of balanced assessment.
