Leading improvement in your school or system

Keep the focus on a few priorities, share a clear vision, and use data to guide your decisions. Make improvement part of daily work, not an add-on.

What to do

  1. Step 1: Treat school improvement as part of daily work, not an add-on.
  2. Step 2: Keep your improvement plan focused on a few priorities, and protect them from competing demands.
  3. Step 3: Develop a shared vision of holistic student success with others, and communicate it widely.
  4. Step 4: Make sure everyone understands the vision and how they are working towards it.
  5. Step 5: Work with the Ministry so your plan aligns with Ministry plans, priorities and goals.
  6. Step 6: Give teachers ongoing, job-embedded professional development in evidence-based teaching and assessment.
  7. Step 7: Give your improvement team the time, resources, data and authority it needs.
  8. Step 8: Be visible, accessible and approachable. Keep two-way communication open with students, parents, staff and stakeholders.
  9. Step 9: Model data-informed decisions, and help others collect, analyse and use data.
  10. Step 10: Report openly on progress towards your vision and goals.
  1. Step 1: Keep system improvement plans focused on a few priorities.
  2. Step 2: Protect school and system priorities from competing demands, especially by limiting how many projects schools must run at once.
  3. Step 3: Plan, resource, run, monitor and evaluate all activities in system improvement plans.
  4. Step 4: Monitor school improvement plans and remove barriers to progress as quickly as possible.
  5. Step 5: Develop a shared vision of holistic student success with others, and make sure everyone understands it.
  6. Step 6: Work with school leaders so school plans align with Ministry plans, priorities and goals.
  7. Step 7: Give teachers and school leaders the data they need, and help them use it.
  8. Step 8: Make sure teachers have the learning resources and job-embedded professional development they need.
  9. Step 9: Be visible, accessible and approachable, with open two-way communication.
  10. Step 10: Report openly on progress towards system goals.
