Deciding who does what on your staff
The Education Regulations make you responsible for giving staff their duties. Use each teacher’s strengths, and supervise both teaching and non-teaching staff.
This page is only in the practice guide for school leaders. It is not part of your guide.
Do this now
- Step 1: Give every member of staff their duties. The Education Regulations make this your job.
- Step 2: Share out duties among teachers so you make the best use of each teacher’s particular strengths.
- Step 3: Supervise the teachers in your school.
- Step 4: Supervise your non-teaching staff too.
- Step 5: In a secondary school, your deputy principal prepares the staff duty list.
- Step 6: Hold at least one staff meeting every term. Keep a record of what was discussed and decided.
- Step 7: Pass on letters and messages from staff to the right person without delay.
If you are a school leader
Giving staff their duties (regulation 17) is subject to the Minister’s policy and the general directions of the board. The other duties are under regulation 18, subject to the Education Act and the Regulations.
If you are an education officer
This page is from the practice guide for school leaders. It is not in the education officers' guide.
