The transformation agenda

Your role in transformation

The guides suggest practical ways you can help deliver each part of the roadmap. These are examples, not a complete list.

What you can do

  1. Programmes for every student: offer academic and extra-curricular programmes that fit students’ strengths and interests. Model and reinforce positive behaviour and ethical conduct.
  2. Curricula for growth: help teachers include 21st century skills. Make sure students get a guaranteed and viable curriculum. Build career readiness through job shadowing and work experience.
  3. Technology: secure, maintain and upgrade school technology. Give teachers job-embedded training, and look for technology use in lesson plan reviews, visits and staff meetings.
  4. Teaching quality: model high expectations for all students. Lead continuous improvement that targets evidence-based teaching and assessment.
  5. Leadership: keep a professional growth plan. Take part in ongoing professional development, and network with other school leaders.
  6. Facilities: inspect regularly and deal with maintenance and safety issues. Make facilities accessible, upgrade technology and buy furniture that supports active learning.
  7. Laws and policies: review school policies regularly. Make sure they align with Ministry policy and are realistic with the resources you have.
  1. Programmes for every student: develop and resource a curriculum that responds to Barbadian students’ backgrounds, abilities and interests. Build character and citizenship.
  2. Curricula for growth: build 21st century skills and applied learning into curricula. Expand work-integrated learning. Align programmes and scholarships with in-demand occupations.
  3. Technology: plan and fund school technology, including maintenance and licences. Work with internet providers to improve school internet. Embed ICT in all curricula and training.
  4. Teaching quality: lead continuous system improvement. Develop balanced assessment. Give feedback on school and classroom visits.
  5. Leadership: keep a professional growth plan. Give school leaders supportive supervision, and design professional learning for leaders at every career stage.
  6. Facilities: budget for building and maintenance. Inspect schools regularly. Remove barriers to access, and buy furniture that supports active learning.
  7. Laws and policies: review laws, policies and procedures regularly. Help school leaders align and implement policy, and keep policies realistic.
