The roadmap: Reimagining Education in Barbados

The Ministry’s 2023 roadmap, Reimagining Education in Barbados, aims to improve student outcomes. Its goal is holistic student success for every child.

What the roadmap focuses on

  1. Design programmes that fit students’ different abilities and interests.
  2. Develop curricula and programmes that contribute to economic growth and national development.
  3. Strengthen the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs).
  4. Improve the quality of teaching.
  5. Strengthen school and system leadership.
  6. Provide better physical facilities that support student outcomes.
  7. Update the laws and regulations that govern education.

The vision of student success

Student success used to mean achievement in tests and exams. The roadmap widens it to holistic student success: learning, development and well-being, the values students hold, what they contribute, and the skills they take to work.

The roadmap describes well-rounded students who are:

  • Rooted in Bajan values: hard-working, kind, mannerly, caring, honest and proud to be Bajan
  • Respectful of human life
  • Emotionally secure
  • Respectful of cultural heritage
  • Skilled in core skills and competences
  • Critical and independent thinkers
  • Showing a positive work ethic
  • Showing multiple literacies
  • Respectful and appreciative of family, community and country
  • Self-confident
  • Appreciative of diversity
  • Problem solvers
  • Respectful of the environment
