Running a Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle

Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) is a four-step cycle for continuous improvement. You plan a change, try it, study the data, then adjust and start again.

Do this now

  1. Step 1: Plan. Use data and evidence to create a shared vision of student success. Name the main problems in the way, and the changes you will make to solve them.
  2. Step 2: Do. Make the planned changes. Collect different kinds of data to measure their impact.
  3. Step 3: Study. With your improvement team, analyse the data. How far have the problems been solved and the vision achieved?
  4. Step 4: Act. Adjust your improvement plan based on what you found. Then start the cycle again.

If you are a school leader

Give your school improvement team the time, resources, data and decision-making authority it needs to do its work.

If you are an education officer

Give school leaders the data they need for improvement planning. Monitor school improvement plans and remove barriers to progress as quickly as you can.

More detail

The PDSA cycle is used to make improvements in many sectors, including business and healthcare, as well as education. Student success sits at the centre of the cycle.
