Standards for educational leaders

The five leadership standards at a glance

Barbados has five standards for educational leaders. They describe what quality leadership looks like, and they frame the programmes at the Leadership Institute.

The five standards

  1. Standard 1 – Excellence (instructional leadership): advance quality curriculum, teaching and learning. See Standard 1.
  2. Standard 2 – Equity (inclusive leadership): create inclusive, caring and safe schools. See Standard 2.
  3. Standard 3 – Effectiveness (transformational leadership): lead continuous school and system improvement. See Standard 3.
  4. Standard 4 – Efficiency (operational leadership): oversee staff, resources and facilities. See Standard 4.
  5. Standard 5 – Engagement (distributed leadership): build collaboration, communication and partnerships. See Standard 5.

How the standards were developed

The standards support the preparation, practice and professional growth of leaders who improve the learning, development and well-being of all students. They were developed in three ways:

  1. Putting the Barbadian context first, including government priorities, stakeholders’ views, and the peoples, cultures, values and communities of Barbados.
  2. Building on the CARICOM Standards for Educational Leaders (2020).
  3. Drawing on the best features of leadership standards from around the world.

The standards use a blended model of leadership. They promote values-based, ethical leadership marked by honesty, integrity, accountability and professionalism.

In some countries, standards like these guide recruitment, supervision, appraisal and licensing. Elsewhere they support self-assessment and reflection.
